Airtran AirwaysAirTran Airway is a low-cost airline whose home base is Orlando, Florida. Its parent company is AirTran Holdings, and it operates over 700 flights daily throughout the eastern and Midwest United States. Airtran Airways schedule includes 2000 daily departures from Atlanta and is the world’s largest Boeing operator. Although Air Tran Airways has its main base at Orlando International Airport, it also has a principal Hub at Hatsfield-Jackson-Atlanta International Airport.
AirTran Airways was originally established in June 1993 under the name of Conquest Sun Airlines. The name was changed to AirTran Airways in August 1994. In 1997, AirWays Corporation, the parent company of Air Tran Airways announced a merger with ValuJet Airlines, the first one of the airline industry’s reverse mergers. In 1997 ValuJet was renamed AirTran Airways because the firm’s public image was never able to recover from the crash of ValuJet Flight 592. The parent company then became AirTran Holdings Inc. on September 24, 1997 with operations under new management commencing on September 1, 1998.
Air Tran Airlines began assigning seats on its planes in October 1997. Previously AirTran offered seats on a first come, first served onboard seating process that is popular with the high-frequency, low-fare carriers, and the next month Business class seats were included on every flight. All of the old routes from Orlando were ending after the merger with ValuJet Airlines in order to focus on Atlanta.
In March 1998, AirTran Airway initiated a frequent flyer program that was called A+ Rewards. Three months later Entrepreneur Magazine gave Air Tran Airlines an award for “Best Domestic Low-Fare Airline.” AirTran Airways won the same reward in 2002, 2004, and 2005.
Recently AirTran Airway completed the installation of in-flight entertainment on all of the aircraft in both business class and coach. The entertainment on Air Tran airlines includes over 100 channels of XM satellite radio on its flights.
In November 2006, AirTran Airways entered into a partnership with Frontier Airlines that allows frequent flyers to earn airline miles in Airframes A+ Rewards or Frontier’s Early Returns frequent flyer program. Both airlines will refer customers to each other when it is appropriate to do so.
