America West AirlineAmerica West (US Airways) is one the top ten major airlines in the United States and the second largest low-cost airline in the US. America West offers service to abut 100 destinations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Also, European service is available through code-sharing arrangements. In May 2005 America West Holdings announced its merger with US Airways group. America West has been all but swallowed up by the merger with US Airways as all America West airlines have been flying under the US Airways moniker since January, 2006.America West was one of the great success stories of the early 80’s. Started in August 1983 with three Boeing 737’s, the attitude out of the Phoenix based company was so lax that you could buy your ticket on the plane; the America West “On-Air” fare. These three quickly grew and the companies use of cross training, aggressive growth by way of their terminal use and buying new aircraft, as well as offering red-eye flights from Las Vegas so you could extend that last round just a little bit longer, made America West a great company to be. But a few mistakes later; their overzealous thoughts for their use of terminals, their buying airbuses to travel to Japan, with little interest from commuters, and the increase in fuel costs prior to the Persian Gulf War, let America West to bankruptcy in 1991. After bankruptcy in 1991, stock (including employee stock, which was a 20% requirement off your salary) became worthless and there was a fleecing of their assets, planes, and they pared down their flight schedule. ‘ America West air fares are no longer in existence as they’ve been bought up by US Airways. America West flight fund was probably part of their assets which were confiscated when they filed Chapter 11. America West Airline is no longer servicing customers. Their CEO has been removed, their planes have been stripped, and their employees answer to a new boss now, if they still have a job at all. If you talk about cheap air fare rates and America West, I guess you should consider the fact that, there is nothing brining in any money for America West at all. So, your plane costs can’t get much cheaper than that.
